DescriptionPosition Summary
The Lower School Physical Education Teacher provides developmentally appropriate instruction for students in Pre-K through Grade 5 and supports their physical, social, and emotional development. The program focuses on building fundamental movement skills, confidence, teamwork, and a positive relationship with physical activity.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, this position requires coaching.
Essential Responsibilities
- Plan and teach physical education classes for students in Pre-K through Grade 5 that promote skill development, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship
- Provide instruction in fundamental movement skills, coordination, and age-appropriate activities and games
- Create a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment for all students
- Adapt lessons to support a range of abilities and learning styles
- Monitor student participation and progress and maintain appropriate records in accordance with school expectations
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators to support student development
- Communicate with families regarding student progress when appropriate
- Support school events such as field days, special activities, and grade-level trips as needed
Participate in professional learning and faculty responsibilities as part of the school community
Coaching Responsibilities
- Coach a minimum of two athletic seasons per year – with priority being lower school athletics.
- Plan and lead practices and games that emphasize skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship
- Support a positive team environment that encourages participation and confidence
- Communicate clearly with families and students regarding schedules and expectations
- Follow all school policies, league guidelines, and safety procedures
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred
- Experience teaching elementary-aged students’ preference
- Experience coaching youth sports preferred
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, run, and demonstrate physical activities for extended periods
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 25-30 pounds
- Ability to supervise and participate in indoor and outdoor activities in varying weather conditions
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies or student needs
