Description

Position Summary
The Lower School Physical Education Teacher provides developmentally appropriate instruction for students in Pre-K through Grade 5 and supports their physical, social, and emotional development. The program focuses on building fundamental movement skills, confidence, teamwork, and a positive relationship with physical activity.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, this position requires coaching.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach physical education classes for students in Pre-K through Grade 5 that promote skill development, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship
  • Provide instruction in fundamental movement skills, coordination, and age-appropriate activities and games
  • Create a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment for all students
  • Adapt lessons to support a range of abilities and learning styles
  • Monitor student participation and progress and maintain appropriate records in accordance with school expectations
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators to support student development
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress when appropriate
  • Support school events such as field days, special activities, and grade-level trips as needed
    Participate in professional learning and faculty responsibilities as part of the school community

Coaching Responsibilities

  • Coach a minimum of two athletic seasons per year – with priority being lower school athletics.
  • Plan and lead practices and games that emphasize skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship
  • Support a positive team environment that encourages participation and confidence
  • Communicate clearly with families and students regarding schedules and expectations
  • Follow all school policies, league guidelines, and safety procedures

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience teaching elementary-aged students’ preference
  • Experience coaching youth sports preferred
  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, run, and demonstrate physical activities for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 25-30 pounds
  • Ability to supervise and participate in indoor and outdoor activities in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies or student needs
